World Clean-Up Day saw a number of organisations unite in Morningside for a good cause.
The global initiative, commemorated on September 18, is aimed at uniting community around the world to take part in environmental activities and help combat waste.
Learners from Redhill School and the guys in green from community organisation City-Zen partnered with Morningside Shopping Centre to clean up the small park area on the corner of Outspan and West Road North.
According to City-Zen founder Najen Naidoo, partnerships between local businesses and schools play an integral role in creating a clean and safe environment.
“[This] means more people go out and shop and enjoy the outdoors, which means that customers end up spending more and actively supporting organisations that care and property in the community becomes more desirable and valuable which means more spending can happen.
“Through these partnerships we can uplift everyone in the community together.”
Naidoo added that he hopes that the learners in particular were able to get insight into how small projects like this can uplift the community.
“We want them to know that they can make a difference and the problems that South Africa faces can be solved from the ground up, we don’t have to feel overwhelmed, helpless or despondent,” he said.
Many of the Redhill School learners brought their families along to take part in the clean-up.
One learner, Jitong Liu, noted that the clean-up was important because not only did she drive past this area on her way to school, but this was her community too.
“We all [need to] contribute to make our community cleaner and the world a better place” she said.
