JMPD officer is grateful that his team is alive

SANDTON – "The thing that I love the most about being an officer, is the fact that I can help the various communities and residents in Johannesburg," says JMPD officer, Xolani Fihla

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, Xolani Fihla, never expected to join the police force but was to do so encouraged by his father – and it changed his life.

Fihla joined the department in 2007 as a trainee and reached greater heights in 2008 when he graduated from the JMPD Academy.

He discussed what he most enjoys about his line of work and touches on the misconceptions people have with regards to the department. “The thing that I love the most about being an officer, is the fact that I can help the various communities and residents in Johannesburg. Most people think that Metro police is all about enforcement but it’s not. One thing that we do help with, aside from enforcing the law, is helping out individuals that have vehicle failures and are in need of assistance. We always share information on anything related to the department,” he said.

Fihla concluded with a positive perspective as the world tackles a new common enemy, Covid-19. “The positives that I have seen is that we as the JMPD really appreciate each other as colleagues especially after witnessing so many Covid-19 related deaths in our department. The department has built a spirit of camaraderie.”
