Scores of schools in the Bryanston area took part in a local school hockey tournament on September 11 at Bryanston High School.
Sixteen teams from five different schools displayed their hockey skills in the inaugural Bryanston High prestige hockey festival. Eight boys and girls teams were placed into two pools.
Sports director at Bryanston High School, Wian van Vyk, said the day’s events was an overwhelming success. “The festival serves as a platform for all primary school kids to come and view and enjoy our school and the facilities we have to offer, almost like a mini open day. It was an absolute success, we had great attendance and the competition was fierce,” he said.
The schools that participated were Bedfordview Primary, Rivonia Primary, Bryanston Primary, Bryanston Parallel Medium and Bryandale Primary schools.
After a portion of the round-robin matches took place, players took part in a skills challenge alongside the first team players of the high school. Tournament director at the school, Lorenzo Thomson, said the aim of the tournament was to create a network and relationship between the school and primary school players by giving them a chance to take part and enjoy hockey in the community.
Van Wyk concluded, “This was our first year of competition, we thought it would be a great idea to host all the Primary schools in our area, a nice tournament to get all involved. We need to give all players proper exposure and it also gives us the opportunity to view and appreciate all the talent.”
In the end, the Bryandale Primary School boys and Bryanston Parallel Medium Griffins girls were winners of the overall tournament.
