Facing the realities of women in Sandton

SANDTON – Researchers on the project include Professor Kammila Naidoo, Dr Lyn Ossome and Dr Sinethemba Sidloyi from the universities of Cambridge and Johannesburg.

Many women shy away from labelling themselves as a victim or discuss the challenges that they face on a daily basis.

This is according to Sandton resident Dr Shannon Philip, who, together with a research team, is currently working on a research project which looks at gender-based violence issues facing women residing and/or working in the Sandton area.

Researchers on the project include Professor Kammila Naidoo, Dr Lyn Ossome and Dr Sinethemba Sidloyi from the universities of Cambridge and Johannesburg.

The team has thus far heard the stories of over 50 women from different races, ages and backgrounds living in Sandton.

“Our focus on stories and life experiences of middle-class and wealthy women in Sandton is unique and provides some fresh insights into women’s lives that has not been done before,” said Philip.

He added that the team has found that most middle-class and wealthy women in Sandton find it difficult to think of themselves as victims.

“Sometimes they have not experienced any violence per se, but they are frustrated by unfair pressures or expectations from their male partners which they find difficult to talk about.”
