Girls get technical

SANDTON – Over 40 young girls from the centre were treated to a robotics display and given the opportunity to meet the alumni from the institute.

Local media personality Faith Mangope hopes to get more young girls excited about the world of technology.

The honorary Morningside Rotary Club member recently celebrated the second birthday of the Faith Mangope Technology and Leadership Institute (FMTALI) by inviting a group of young girls of youth development organisation Afrika Tikkun for a fun-filled day exploring the exciting world of technology.

More than 40 young girls of the organisation were treated to a robotics display and given the opportunity to meet the alumni of the institute.

The institute was established in 2019 to help align Africa’s youth, particularly young women, with a working environment governed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“FMTALI’s vision is to build a school and institute for young women who are not able to afford tuition, to attend a six-month and one-year programme whereby the institute would educate these young women both in technology and leadership skills,” said Mangope.

She added that although some strides have been made to advance women in tech, more needed to be done.

“Women currently hold only 19% of tech-related jobs at the top 10 global tech companies, relative to men who hold 81%. In leadership positions at these global tech giants, women make up 28%, with men representing 72%.

“Whilst the future is in their hands, it is our responsibility as adults to enable them with the necessary tools and skills needed.”
