Naledi shows excellent recovery after heart surgery

KELVIN – Fenwich said that the haven has struggled to cover their financial obligations since the start of lockdown.

Five-year-old Naledi of Juno Aurora Haven in Kelvin is doing well following life-saving heart surgery last year.

Founder of Juno Aurora Haven Chaya Fenwich explained that Naledi required surgery due to a heart murmur that was later diagnosed as a heart defect, presenting itself as a growth on the left aorta.

Naledi received surgery at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in November 2020 and has since recovered well.

The Chronicle wrote about Naledi’s need for community funding to cover the costs involved in her surgery and recovery in She’s a warrior [Week ending November 13, 2020].

“Her paediatric cardiologist is very happy with her progress. She was running around and playing with other children within a week after surgery,” said Fenwich.

She added that Naledi did not need any further surgery at this stage, though her doctor would be monitoring her regularly in case the growth reappeared.

“I am extremely grateful and amazed at her quick recovery and progress. I have learned so much from her, she is so young yet so strong and brave. I believe that she has a very special purpose in this world, which is why her life has been saved.

“I would like to express enormous gratitude to every single person who assisted in any way towards Naledi’s surgery and aftercare at home. Without your generosity, our little princess may not have been with us. There are no words that can express enough thanks and gratitude.”

Fenwich said the haven had struggled to cover their financial obligations since the start of lockdown.

“Not only has fundraising been a huge challenge, but some of our donors have had to withdraw due to their own challenges.”

Residents are encouraged to give monthly donations from as little as R100 or assist with groceries, toiletries, cleaning materials, sanitisers etc. Locals can also start fundraising initiatives to assist.

Fenwich said the haven was in need of a vehicle such as a kombi that could seat 20 children and three adults, which could be used for school transport and outings.
