Sanbs calls community to donate blood this Mandela Day

CRAIGHALL – Mahlangu said that Sanbs had to temporarily suspend operations at a number of donor centres, directly impacting their daily unit collections.

The South African National Blood Service (Sanbs) urged community members to donate blood following multiple incidents of vandalism and looting at many of its donor centres.

Sanbs communications officer Khensani Mahlangu said the service had unfortunately suffered multiple incidents of looting and vandalism at many donor centres, with the most impacted area being KwaZulu-Natal.

“The looting witnessed on live TV during President Ramaphosa’s address was at our donor centre in Queensmead Mall, Durban. From what we know at the moment, electronic devices, specialised equipment such as blood scales and other consumables used during collection of blood were taken,” said Mahlangu.

“We are still assessing the cost of damage and the full extent of all our losses is yet to be determined.”

Mahlangu added that Sanbs had to temporarily suspend operations at a number of donor centres, directly impacting their daily unit collections.

“Some of our donor centres are gradually reopening but the general approach that we are taking now is one of caution and some donor centres remain temporarily closed – pending the restoration of calm in volatile areas.”

Blood stocks, however, remained stable due to the ‘all hands on deck’ approach taken to ensure business continuity and to ensure that blood reached patients in hospital who needed it.

While Sanbs operations continued to function fully in the majority of provinces, donors were advised to enquire at their donor centre before arriving to ensure their safety.

“Maintaining adequate blood supplies is of paramount importance to the health of patients and the efficient operation of the healthcare system.

“With the added pressure of Covid-19 business and school closures, we may run into blood shortages so regular donation is important to avoid crises.”

Mahlangu encouraged locals to spare 30 of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day on July 18 to donate blood.

Operating times at The Colony Donor Centre at 349 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall are from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 18:00 and on Saturday and Sunday between 9:00 and 14:00.
