Teaching the youth to grow their wealth

SANDTON – The virtual game allows participants to test their share trading skills through an ongoing annual simulated ghost-trading programme.

The 48th JSE Investment Challenge is well underway and the learners taking part did not disappoint.

During the announcement of the first few winning schools on July 8, JSE CSI officer Ralph Spiers was joined by award-winning film and television actress Hlubi Mboya-Arnold.

The pair hope to inspire more high school learners and tertiary students to take up the JSE Investment Challenge and learn more about the stock market.

The virtual game allows participants to test their share trading skills through an ongoing annual simulated ‘ghost-trading’ programme. Each team is given an imaginary sum of R1 million to invest in any JSE-listed company.

Each team’s performance is tracked and measured against other teams as they aim to grow the R1 million that they invested.

Mboya-Arnold added that the uniqueness surrounding the investment challenge is that it is a virtual game that not only teaches the teams how to invest but provides them with a platform to practise their investment skills in preparation for the future.

“One thing I love about the JSE Investment Challenge is that we really get to see teams from all over the country, different schools or institutions and different walks of life. It is really all about diversity and inclusivity,” she said.

Spiers noted that while July is a savings month, the JSE would like to see more people take their savings and invest it at some stage. “This is why it is so important for everyone to understand what investing is all about,” said Spiers.

“We are trying to grow and teach the youth from a young age to be able to understand how the stock market works and how they can grow their wealth over time.”

This year’s May category winners were the Goal Diggers from Gansbaai Academia under the equity portfolio, the JSE Warriors from Crawford College La Lucia under the speculator portfolio and Smart Mind Traders from Mpumelelo Secondary School under the income portfolio.
