Re-register to vote in your local government elections

RANDBURG – You may need to re-register to vote in the upcoming local government elections.

The local government municipal elections have been set for October 27 but many will have to re-register to vote on July 17 and 18.

To be eligible to vote, you have to be a South African citizen, 18 years and older and registered as a voter.

You need to have a barcoded ID book or smart card. You can SMS your ID no to 32810 to ascertain if you are registered.

If you have moved in the meantime, you need to re-register. On July 17 and 18, there will be national voter registration. This is an ideal time for young folk who have turned 18, to register.

Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood, who will not be running for elections again, advised residents to check their correct voting station by going online to check.da.org.za

“Unlike the national and provincial elections, you have to vote where you are registered. You can’t go to a neighbouring ward or town to vote,” Wood explained.

“In the 2016 local government elections, there was no provision for the folk overseas to vote. In this election, I suspect the same ruling will apply.”
