Collaboration leads to multiple arrests in Sandton

SANDTON – Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the team for their continued hard work and commitment to curb serious and violent crimes in the province.

A collaborative effort by law enforcement and a number of private security firms led to the arrest of four suspects in Sandton.

The suspects were arrested on 23 June by a team comprising the Gauteng Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit, Johannesburg East Crime Intelligence, Johannesburg K9 Unit, Fidelity Specialised Services, Tracker SA and Community Active Protection.

According to police provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo, teams responded to information that the suspects, reportedly involved in armed robberies with aggravated circumstances, were in Sandton.

“The suspects’ vehicle was spotted and stopped. Upon searching the suspects and vehicle, police found two unlicensed firearms.”

It was also discovered that the engine of the vehicle that they were driving had been tampered with and it was suspected that the vehicle had been stolen.

“The team acted swiftly and arrested four suspects who were found with two unlicensed firearms and driving a car suspected to be stolen,” said Masondo.

In a separate incident, together with the Tshwane Metro Police Department K9 Unit, the same team recovered a car that was reportedly hijacked in Alexandra.

“[We] received information about a hijacked vehicle that was stored in Mabopane, Tshwane.”

He added that officers kept a lookout and at about 10.20pm the vehicle was driven out and a chase ensued until the driver was cornered.

A 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with possession of hijacked vehicle.

Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the team for their continued hard work and commitment to curb serious and violent crimes in the province.

“I am pleased with the collaboration between the police and private security companies as the team continue to arrest criminals involved in serious and violent crimes.”

“I would also like to thank the community that continue to give information to the police and expose criminals. Working together we can bring crime to its minimum,” said Mthombeni.
