Bryanston High cyclist retains provincial title

BRYANSTON – Massimilliano Ambrossi is set to receive his Gauteng cycling colours, an honour that has not been awarded in 14 years.

Bryanston High School’s very own Massimilliano Ambrossi continues to outdo himself on track.

The Grade 10 learner recently retained his title at the provincial XCO series, becoming the Gauteng champion for a third consecutive year.

According to Massimilliano, it was great to be back on the track for this series. “It was great to be able to participate under semi-normal conditions this year. Not having a compressed race calendar allowed us to put a bit more training in and enjoy these tough races more.”

He added that even though this was his third consecutive win, the XCO series continues to challenge him in many ways as the courses are never exactly the same each time. “They keep getting harder, the distance longer and more technical as the season progresses. The level of competition from my fellow riders is fierce so I am always on my toes,” noted Massimilliano.

The win meant that the young rider wrapped up the series with four wins and an overall second place finish. “The pressure was certainly on me to perform and expectations are always high but I worked hard for this win, it’s an amazing feeling.

“We look forward to the remaining national races and the preparation for the 2022 season where I will be moving up to the junior age group which is subject to UCI (Union Cycliste International) world rankings.”

Massimilliano is also set to receive his Gauteng cycling colours, an honour that has not been awarded in 14 years. “I’m happy that I managed to take the win and am very grateful for all the opportunities and support I receive. I would like to give a big shout-out to Bicycle Service Company (BSC), Trek SA and CoachInc.SA who have supported me and helped me greatly toward this achievement.”
