Biathletes bring smiles

ILLOVO – The pair cycled 100km and ran 21km in order to raise funds and awareness for the foundation which assists children with facial abnormalities to receive corrective reconstructive surgery.

Smile Foundation raised more than R130 000 through a biathlon challenge involving athletes Temotio Jacopo and Steve Saunders on Youth Day.

The pair cycled 100km and ran 21km in order to raise funds and awareness for the foundation which assists children with facial abnormalities to receive corrective reconstructive surgery.

Saunders, who works as a sports commentator and has a background in sports and health, explained that their cycle began at the Planet Fitness Olympus branch in Pretoria. They then journeyed through Riversands, Northcliff Hill, Parkview, Rosebank, Illovo, Houghton and Saxonwold on their challenge.

The men were joined by business directors and supporters of the Smile Foundation through various sections of the journey which was streamed online in order to create publicity and encourage further fundraising.

Saunders said he enjoyed supporting charities that focus on people on the fringes of society which generally have a rough run in their efforts to raise funds.

“It is our moral obligation to support the future outlook of a child with facial abnormalities. So often, these deformities result in social stigma and isolation. The surgeries give children a second chance,” said Saunders.

Jacopo, who works as a personal trainer, said he has been involved in supporting the foundation for seven years.

He said the biggest challenge of the event was keeping a positive mindset throughout.

“We live in world where we need each other to build better communities for now and the future. It’s therefore important that we all support better health and comprehensive healthcare for children. Children are our future. Each treatment goes a long way to helping children live better and improved lifestyle,” said Jacopo.

The cycle took 03:36:00 to complete while the run took 01:56:00.
