Paw-tastic Youth Day for Sandton SPCA

MORNINGSIDE – Chair Nafisa Desbois added that the Sandton SPCA hopes to use the funds raised to carry out some basic maintenance needed at its Marlboro Gardens campus.

It was a morning of fun-filled laughter and dog barks in Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside.

Sandton SPCA together with the Friends of Sandspruit hosted its Youth Day Dog Walk for all of the community’s dog-loving residents on 16 June.

According to Sandton SPCA’s Meg Wilson, it was a lovely morning as the community came together to help raise funds for both non-profit organisations.

“Our walk was a fun-filled, Covid-friendly outing for the entire family including the pooches,” said Wilson.

Sandton SPCA chair Nafisa Desbois said her organisation hoped to use the funds raised from the walk to carry out some of the basic maintenance needed at its Marlboro Gardens campus.

“Our kennels require [the] fencing to be replaced, our puppy runs need to be upgraded to adhere to the strict hygiene protocols, and we need medical supplies to treat animals not only in our care but the community we serve.”

She added that combined with the tough year that Sandton SPCA was having on account of the lockdown and lacklustre economy, it was important for the SPCA to get any help where it could.

In addition, the SPCA had been unable to run its much-needed Outreach Sterilisation programmes which were not only necessary but helped the community.

“We aimed at the beginning of 2020 to run an Outreach Sterilisation programme monthly but due to Covid we were unable to do this. “The impact of this is huge – more unwanted puppies, kittens, more cruelty cases, more dogfighting, illegal sales of puppies and just more sadness.”

The SPCA appealed to the community to remain aware of this and sterilise their pets, and to not support pet shops and backyard breeders.

“We serve our community with all that we have and request all the help we can get to continue preventing cruelty to animals.”
