Bryneven Primary scores at reading competition

BRYANSTON – A number of learners achieved as the provincial winners of their grade during the semi-final.

Bryneven Primary School learners exceptionally represented their school at the semi-final round of the National Prepared Reading Competition.

Hosted by the South African Literacy Association, the school saw its best learners from each grade compete against various other schools.

According to the school’s Prabashinee Govender, the first round of the competition was hosted virtually with learners submitting recorded readings to the association for adjudication.

“The initial round yielded excellent results for our school with all 15 learners qualifying to participate at the provincial semi-final round held at Future Nations School.”

In the semi-finals, presented to the panel of adjudicators in person, all 15 learners did exceptionally well with their reading and presentation skills

“[The learners] secured the top four positions in each grade and division, earning them a well-deserved spot to compete in the National Finals to be hosted later this year,” added Govender.

A number of learners also achieved as the provincial winners of their grade during the semi-final.

The semi-final provincial winners from each grade were:

  • Sonali Kistanna and Theo Pretorius (Grade 4)
  • Joseph Ban (Grade 5)
  • Tasmin Govender and Franki Theron (Grade 6)
  • Dakota Jackson and Aryana Malherbe (Grade 7)

Principal Naeem Nakooda was extremely impressed by the learners’ achievements especially because reading is the foundation of education.

“At Bryneven we strive to ensure that our learners benefit from the reading initiatives in place and it is pleasing to see these initiatives bearing fruit.

“We are extremely proud of the performance of our learners at this level of the competition and wish them all the best in the National Finals. We would like to acknowledge the important contributions made by our teachers towards our learners’ achievements.”
