Selecting the right subjects

One of the major milestones in any learner’s high school career is choosing your subjects for Grade 10 and beyond.

If you are set on a specific career path, finding and choosing the right subjects is important as it will lead you onto your career path. If your child is set on a specific career path, it is important for parents to help them choose the subjects that will contribute to their career choice.

It is thus up to the learners and the parents to do the relevant research and find out which subjects are linked to their interested careers.

Student portal Matric College recommends the following five tips for choosing your subjects:

• Explore who you are

When choosing your subjects you must consider your interests, passions, values, personality preferences, skills and talents. As you explore who you are you will be able to decide which of these factors are most important in helping you choose your subjects.

• Discover career fields

Explore and research different career fields by consulting with professionals or job shadowing, this will help you gain an understanding of the work environment.

• Consider further education

One important factor about choosing your subjects is the fact that you have to consider how your subject choice will affect you after high school. Think about how your subjects will get you into university or college.

• Identify subject requirements

The course requirements for tertiary institutions differ which means that certain courses will require that you complete specific subjects as well as achieve specific results in these subjects.

• Understand the subjects you can choose from

Gain an understanding about the subjects that you want to choose from. Find out what each subject offers and how you can learn or benefit from each subject.
