Lion’s club president pedals for a cause

BENMORE – The challenge encourages the community to either take 100 000 steps or cycle 100km over the seven day period to help raise awareness for the guide dogs.

The Wild Lions Club of Johannesburg continues to show support for the South African Guide-Dogs Association.

Club president Mark Meltzer has entered the association’s Step Up for Guide-Dogs Challenge, taking place from 21 to 28 April. The challenge encourages the community to either take 100 000 steps or cycle 100km over the seven-day period to help raise awareness for the guide dogs.

Meltzer has committed for a second consecutive year to cycle 100km for the association. “We were challenged to be the ‘Knights of the Blind’ by Helen Keller when she addressed an International Lions Club Convention way back in the early 1900s.”

He added that the Wild Lions Club of Johannesburg has been supporters of the guide-dogs association for years so it is an honour to be part of the challenge again. “Lions Clubs internationally are motivated to assist the blind with sight-related issues, such as river blindness,” he said.
