Crawford learners band together for good

BENMORE – At the end of the collection drive the learners reached their goal of 500 000 bottle caps, assisting five people in need.

Three learners from Crawford International Sandton came together to help those in need.

As part of an initiative tasked to the Johannesburg Mini-City Council members, learners Aston Jordan and Alexia Comninos began collecting bottle tops in November last year to be recycled and eventually give someone in need a wheelchair.

“It all starts with the collection, once Aston and Alexia had collected enough they sent them to a collection point where the caps would be melted down to the plastic and sold back to the bottling companies. Then that money would be used to buy wheelchairs for those in need,” said the school’s head of marketing and admissions Nadia Cooke.

It takes an estimated 100 000 bottle tops for one wheelchair and their goal was to collect 500 000 bottle tops.

It seemed like a daunting task at first but after sharing the challenge with the school, the collection drive began. “It felt like they had collected five million bottle tops, but when there was only one week to go they had only collected about 300 000 lids.”

Just when the duo thought their goal was unattainable, at the last minute last month, one of the Grade 2 learners Jaiden Levine came in to save the day. Thanks to Jaiden, Aston and Alexia now had 450 000 bottle tops ready to recycle.

By the end of the collection drive, the learners reached their goal of 500 000 bottle caps, assisting five people in need.
