Rotary Morningside donates R42 000 in food to Diepsloot

MORNINGSIDE – Rotarian and coordinator of the drop project Jack Chen there said that there is an urgent need for food supplies in the neighbouring community.

The Morningside community raised a phenomenal R42 000 worth of food for donation to the Diepsloot community.

Over a two-week period the Rotary Club of Morningside, together with the Morningside Shopping Centre Pick n Pay, hosted its food drive in order to provide food relief to those in need in the community.

Starting on 29 March, the club began collecting donations of non-perishable goods such as samp, beans, pap, tins of food as well as prepared boxes of food which shoppers could purchase for R99 and drop off in the collection box.

“We have discovered that the situation is dire in communities such as Diepsloot where unemployment has skyrocketed due to Covid-19, and previously employed individuals are now resorting to roaming the streets looking for hand-outs for themselves and their families.”

According to Rotary Morningside spokesperson Jane Royal, following the success of last year’s Sechaba Support Project (SSP), in which rotary raised over R220 000, it decided to continue its efforts in the Diepsloot community.

“Monetary donations collected under SSP helped Abram Kgari (owner of Oratile Early Childhood Development Centre) continue his feeding scheme in Diepsloot. However, as food insecurity remains a daily reality for the residents of Diepsloot, the Pick n Pay n Drop donations will once again be distributed to the Diepsloot community at the [development] centre,” said Royal.

Rotary would like to thank the community for its generous donations.
