Envirolution Consulting (Pty) Ltd was contracted by the JRA as the independent environmental consultant to undertake the proposed erosion project

CRAIGHALL PARK – The proposed project is for erosion protection measures to be installed within the Hamilton Park stream.

Residents are invited to comment on a draft basic assessment report as well as register as interested and affected parties. The report includes the proposed Construction of Erosion Protection Measures along the stream within Hamilton Park, Craighall Park and Parkhurst.

The application was made by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and a Draft Basic Assessment Report for the project was prepared by environmental consultant Sameera Ismail on behalf of Envirolution Consulting (Pty) Ltd as per their contract with the JRA. The report is available for public review until 26 April.

“As a result of extensive erosion and collapsing of the stream banks, erosion protection measures such as gabion walls and gabion-mattress and fibrous geo-mat bases along the Hamilton Park stream is proposed. The aim is to improve the slope stability of the stream banks,” the proposal stated.

It further stated that the erosion causes safety hazards to the community making use of the park area. There have been a number of complaints from a very active community within the vicinity which has further compelled the JRA to intervene in implementing erosion protection measures.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said although that part of the stream is not in his ward they have a lot of issues higher up, where the stream runs behind the odd-numbered properties in Roxburghe Avenue, Craighall Park.

“In some places there are gabions which are becoming displaced. And there are frequent complaints about erosion, pollution and bad smells emanating from the stream. It is good that the environmental work is being undertaken. I think a more holistic approach would take into account what happens before the stream runs under Clarence Avenue and into the park,” Williams said.

According to the report, proposed works will entail:

– Earthworks – cut to spoil off-site

– Earthworks – cut to fill/backfill

– Imported dump rock below gabion mattresses

– Removal of trees

– Gabion baskets and mattresses complete with stone and wire coating

– Geo-synthetic fibrous erosion mat (geo-mat)

– Bidim

– Top soiling, grassing, planting vegetative pockets, etc

– Reinforced concrete.

A copy of the Draft Basic Assessment Report is available for public review at the Parkview Library corner of Tyrone Avenue, 51 Athlone Road, Parkview.
