Saints boys lend a helping hand

PARKMORE – The St Stithians Boys College Community Engagement Committee headed the clean-up.

Learners from St Stithians Boys’ College spent the day giving back to the Field and Study Park community.

The group of 10 learners from the Community Engagement Committee recently took it upon themselves to care for their environment, tackling the debris and litter along the park’s section of the Braamfontein Spruit.

“The venture reinforced for all involved the fact that what was being done was of mutual benefit to both the students, as ‘the givers’ of their time, and the community, as ‘the recipient’. Of significant importance was that the exercise meant the ecosystem of this area could be maintained,” said Dr Gladys Ayaya, director of community engagement at St Stithians Boys’ College.

She added that the lessons that the boys took away from this experience were both transformational and enriching.

“I can confidently say that this experience instilled leadership values in our students and eliminated their false perceptions that the responsibility of cleaning our environment lies solely with the government’s local authority.”
