Local sounds inspired by Zamunda

SANDTON – Def Jam Africa's latest release was inspired by the sounds of Zamunda

The much-anticipated film, Coming 2 America starring Eddie Murphy and Mzansi’s local beauty, actress Nomzamo Mbatha hit screens all over the world on 5 March.

With fans in awe of what was showcased, it was only fitting to include a soundtrack with all the excitement.

Rhythms of Zamunda was released by Def Jam Africa in Rosebank to showcase some local talent. It’s a compilation of tracks by artists all over the continent to accompany the release of the film.

The iconic 1988 original film Coming to America gave audiences a culture shock into the African-inspired and fictional land of Zamunda.

Inspiring a number of people, Universal Music South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa CEO, Sipho Dlamini said it was important for Def Jam Africa to be involved in the film because it was so legendary to Africans in the diaspora.

“The film franchise is tongue-in-cheek but conveys a rich quality of life in Africa. That is reflected in the music on Rhythms of Zamunda. We wanted to represent some of the sounds that are relevant, impactful and current on the continent.”

Trending and current at the moment is a local artist and northern suburbs resident Tellaman. His single Overdue is featured on the album alongside two heavyweight African artists from Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

“The song is inspired by love experiences. It was a great experience collaborating with other African artists. I am always looking for the next person I can collaborate with but not just to make music but learn from too. The movie was beautiful. We are in a position now where people are trying to learn about us South Africans and where we come from and I think Trevor Noah and Nomzamo Mbatha represented us in a beautiful way.”

The 16-track compilation album features songs about about love, chasing dreams, identity, and triumph over trials.

A triumph for Tellaman, he said he was honoured to be part of something so iconic.

“It really is a huge honour for me, I haven’t released music in about two years so the record that is on the soundtrack, I made it for my upcoming second album, so I think it is a beautiful way to start the year.

“I didn’t even know it would be on here so when I got the call to say it will be an official single on the soundtrack I was so grateful. When my second album drops later this year it will be a milestone I can tick off.”
