Alleged human trafficker in custody

JOBURG – The suspect remains in custody pending further investigation

A suspect has appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for alleged human trafficking.

The 32-year-old man appeared in court on 22 February for trafficking in persons and the possession of counterfeit goods.

According to Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu of the South African Police Service, it was alleged that in November last year a 34-year-old woman was lured from Cape Town to Johannesburg with promises of a job opportunity.

“The investigation revealed that the victim was held captive against her will at different lodges within the Johannesburg area since her arrival. “She was rescued during a disruptive operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, and Randburg and Douglasdale police last week Friday [19 February].”

In addition to the electronic equipment seized by officers, counterfeit goods consisting of luxurious watches, clothing and perfumes worth an estimated R100 000 were also confiscated.

The case was postponed to 1 March

The suspect remains in custody pending further investigation.
