Police amplify response to crime

BUCCLEUCH – Police Minister Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale and Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela accepted the delivery of new highway patrol vehicles at the Buccleuch Interchange.

South African Police Service has received new high-performance vehicles to improve its response to crime.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale and Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela accepted the delivery of new highway patrol vehicles from the Gauteng Provincial Government on 20 February at the Buccleuch Interchange.

According to Cele, these vehicles will aid officers in the fight against crime in the province, particularly with trio crimes such as truck and car hijackings, house robberies and cash-in-transit robberies. This follows the minister’s announcement of the latest crime statistics for the third quarter in which 24 additional cash-in-transit robberies were recorded in comparison to previous quarters.

“We are not going to sit here and think that those statistics are good, this is a national issue. The contribution by the [Gauteng] Premier [David Makhura] is a contribution that all other provinces are expected to make.

“Gauteng has always been regarded as the manufacturer of criminality in the country and this tells me that Gauteng will not tolerate it any longer,” said Cele.
