50 distinctions for Hyde Park High

HYDE PARK – Among the 50 distinctions achieved, leading the group with eight distinctions was Mawete Luwawu.

It was all smiles at Hyde Park High School as the Class of 2020 celebrated their matric results on 19 February.

The school recorded a 97.4 per cent pass rate for the Independent Examination Board (IEB) exams.

According to the school’s Avril Wright, the overall results included 75 bachelor passes, 36 diploma passes and three higher certificate passes. “There were yelps of joy and excitement when the statements of results were handed out at the school on Friday,” she said.

Among the 50 distinctions achieved, leading the group with eight distinctions was Mawete Luwawu. He received distinctions for English, Afrikaans, maths, engineering graphic design (EGD), physical science, information technology, life orientation and applied mathematics.

“Mawete was also placed in the top 1 per cent of IEB candidates in the country for EGD, setting him apart from his peers. He plans on studying mechanical engineering this year.”

Some of the other top achievers included Rebecca Ila with five distinctions and Robert Dalais and Seth Flaum also with four distinctions each.

“The challenges of achieving magnificent results such as these were enormous with Covid-19 restrictions and online lessons,” concluded Wright.
