Two suspects arrested for hijacking at Bowling Avenue fuel station

SANDOWN – Two suspects have been arrested by Sandton Police.

A hijacking suspect was shot dead during a hijacking incident at a fuel station at the corner of Bowling Avenue and Dartfield Road in Sandown on 21 January at about 8.25pm.

Later, Sandton police traced and arrested two other suspects alleged to be involved in the incident.

Spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station Captain Bheki Xulu said the complainant was about to leave the fuel station after filling up with fuel when an unknown man approached him, pointed a firearm at him and forced him out of the vehicle.

Xulu added that one suspect climbed into the driver’s seat of the car while another got inside from the passenger side.

“The suspect struggled to drive the car. The complainant drew his firearm from the waist and fired a shot at the suspect in the chest. Both suspects ran away, joined by a third one. The suspect who was shot collapsed a few metres from the crime scene and died,” said Xulu.

He said inside the complainant’s car, a firearm with no serial number, one magazine and four rounds of live ammunition were found by police belonging to the suspects.

Both suspects will soon appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to answer to charges of hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
