Suspects arrested for violating lockdown rules

BUCCLEUCH – Among the seven suspects was a 48-year-old man who was also charged for negligent handling of a firearm.

Seven suspects were arrested in Buccleuch on 10 January for contravening lockdown regulations.

According to Sandton Police Station spokesperson Captain Bheki Xulu, while on patrol, officers noticed a group of people drinking alcohol outside of a local sports bar at 11.50pm.

“During police’s normal routine of patrolling the area, police noticed the local sports bar was open and there were people sitting outside drinking alcohol. They were all arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act under the Covid-19 regulations,” said Xulu.

Among the seven suspects was a 48-year-old man who was additionally charged for neglectfully handling a firearm. “Following the searching of the premises, police found the licenced firearm placed behind the counter negligently.”

Police confiscated the alcohol and the firearm for further investigation. The suspects are set to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon.
