Sandton restaurant raided for serving alcohol

SANDTON– A popular restaurant in Sandton was raided for openly serving alcohol to patrons while under level three lockdown regulations

The O Kae Molao provincial operations by SAPS yielded positive results on 16 January.

Police arrested two managers of a well-known restaurant on West Street in Sandton for selling alcohol to patrons which is in contravention of the Disaster Management Act Covid-19 adjusted level three lockdown regulations.  

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo police swooped in and found the venue filled to capacity and alcohol served openly on the tables.   “Health protocols not adhered to. Two of the managers were arrested and charged with the contravention of the Disaster Management Act. Police also confiscated liquor to the value of approximately R600 000.00,” he said.  

Another arrest of a restaurant manager was also made in Tshwane for breaking the rules. SAPS added that over 162 people were arrested for failure to confine to a place of residence during the curfew and 34 for failure to wear masks when ordered to do so over the weekend.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng Major General Tommy Mthombeni  led the multi-disciplinary operation in Alexandra this weekend.  

“More than 150 suspects were arrested for various crimes and will appear various Magistrate Courts from Monday while others are out on warnings and fines.” 

Masondo added that police management in the province are concerned about people who undermine the lockdown regulations and continue to contravene the National Disaster Management Act.  

SAPS would like to appeal to citizens to adhere to the Disaster Management Act Covid-19 adjusted level three lockdown regulations.  

“Operations to enforce the regulations will be intensified in the province as long as the people fail to adhere” said Major General Mthombeni.
