Long walk to education

BUCCLEUCH – Residents are encouraged to donate funds in support of this project.

Two local men will begin their journey from Johannesburg to Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on 16 January aiming to raise funds to build a pre-school in the village of Xhora.

Buccleuch resident Onke Sitwayi updated the Chronicle on his plans saying that the pair would leave Southgate Mall using the R82 road on 16 January. Their first pit stop will be at Lenteland campsite.

The pair, Sitwayi and his friend and Sunninghill resident Aphendule Pakade, will walk an average of 34km each day to reach their destination over 27 days.

Discussing his goal, Sitwayi said, “There’s a lot to be done in secluded villages, with no pre-schools, no libraries, lack of study materials, no computer labs or chemistry labs for matric students. Even though our target is R1 million for the pre-school, we are hopeful that we will raise more to reach other areas.”

Driven by the concept of ubuntu, the pair feel motivated to provide change in the province where they grew up.

“I watched my grandfather live by this philosophy growing up and I’ve heard stories of how he fought for the rights of disabled people in my village and made sure that they got government funding.”
“If I don’t do it, who will?” said Sitwayi.

The men will be followed by a sponsored Isuzu vehicle and production crew to track their journey and progress.
