Advice to people feeling depressed this holiday season

Sadag offers free counselling 24-hours a day to people struggling with their mental health.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) offers hope and support to people struggling with mental health over the holiday season.

According to Sadag operations director, Cassey Chambers many people suffer from depression over the festive season for various reasons.

Some might feel incredibly lonely with family far away or having had a loved one pass away during the year and this being the first holiday without them. Some might not have family to visit or be unable to afford a trip home.

“It can also be a very emotional time of the year. It might be the first Christmas after a divorce or break-up. For others, family conflict or other relationship problems with loved ones makes this time of the year particularly difficult,” said Chambers.

Financial troubles can mean many South Africans are unable to buy gifts or provide a meal for their families.

“Many people who experience depression, anxiety and stress during holidays are told to believe that they should just ‘get over it’. Family, friends and loved ones may not understand their feelings or behaviours, and their wanting to avoid certain things or situations can create conflict.”

Chambers advised the following:

  • Lean on your support system. Turn to close friends and family when things get tough
  • Ask for help and be specific
  • Don’t stay longer than you want. Knowing you have a plan to leave a party can help alleviate anxiety. You don’t need to stay until the bitter end
  • Forget about the perfect gift
  • Stick to your budget and make a budget
  • Stay on schedule. Try and stick to your normal routine as much as possible during the holidays. Disrupting your schedule and losing sleep can make your mood deteriorate
  • Don’t rely on substances. Remember that alcohol is a depressant and abusing it will leave you feeling worse. Be especially careful if you are taking medication
  • If you take medication, don’t miss doses.
