Pikitup partnered with Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) to clear the illegal dumping site next to the Marlboro Gautrain Station on 20 November.
Member of the Mayoral Committee, Mpho Moerane said he had a particular passion for the Marlboro and Alexandra communities as this was his hometown.
“This is not a dumping site, this should be a park that the people of Marlboro and Alexandra can enjoy and feel safe in,” added Moerane.
“The Gautrain Management Agency is committed to partnering with the communities around our stations to ensure a safer, cleaner environment.”

According to the agency’s public relations and media specialist, Tlago Ramalepa this particular clean-up campaign was a build-up towards the rehabilitation of the open space next to the station.
“Pikitup and the GMA are pursuing a joint venture to have the space cleared and converted into either a recreational facility, food garden or a community development area that will benefit the community from the ward where the spot is situated,” said Ramalepa.
Moerane encouraged the community to take care of the park and ‘work together to keep it clean’.
Any incidents of illegal dumping can be reported to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department Anti-illegal Dumping Hotline. Residents are advised to take clear photos of the illegal dumping as well as the number plate of the vehicle, then send these pictures together with the date, time and location of the illegal dumping to 082 779 1361.
For the removal of illegal dumping, residents can contact Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or 0860-JOBURG to log a call.
Pikitup only attends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets and council-owned land – illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of City Parks.
