Parkmore residents to receive water pipe upgrade

PARKMORE – External communications officer at Joburg Water, Eleanor Mavimbela said they would replace the pipelines that were laid more than 50 years ago.

Parkmore residents will breathe a sigh of relief following the start of a water pipe replacement project across the suburb as of 6 November.

External communications officer at Joburg Water, Eleanor Mavimbela said they would replace the pipelines that were laid more than 50 years ago.

“The pipes have aged and this makes them fragile, they burst and leak very often. The project will improve the system in that there will not be the need for frequent repairs and also savings in water lost,” added Mavimbela.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said, “I am so glad that at this time when the economy is tightening, we were able to squeeze this project in. Residents pay for services and deserve a decent water supply in this area.”

Project manager for phases 3, 6 and 7, Patrick Makama said the work was expected to take seven months to complete, however, Williams warned that it was unlikely to be completed within this time frame.

Makama said contractors would be replacing the old asbestos piping with high-impact PVC piping which should experience no leakages or breakages. He added that all affected residents have been issued with letters indicating who they should contact if they experienced any problems. He advised residents to communicate with community liaison officers first if they encountered problems, and then escalate the issue.

Williams said, “Be patient with us. This is the final stretch before improved water supply.”

Parkmore Community Association suburb manager Lori Klien said, “Hopefully it will bring an end to the constant water issues we have experienced over the last two to three years. Patience, tolerance and understanding is needed on all sides in order to resolve issues and have a good working relationship.”

Residents with queries concerning the project can contact community liaison officers Johnny Marobe (076 259 7824) or Luyanda Jordan (061 043 0277).
