Meet Crawford’s young women on the Joburg Junior Council

BENMORE – Both learners would like to encourage more learners with a passion for their community to get involved with the Joburg Junior Council.

Crawford College Sandton has announced its two representatives who will be on the Joburg Junior Council next year.

The all-female duo, consisting of Grade 10 learners Divine Adenubi (15) and Shiraz Bodinger (16), is ready to make a difference to the community.

According to Shiraz, being elected as one of the new junior councillors left her feeling both eager and excited. “I am ready to tackle the year head-on and work with my peers to bring about creative initiatives,” she said.

Divine echoed her excitement for the road ahead. “It feels amazing! Just knowing that I have been given the chance to help others and contribute towards a cause greater than myself is so humbling and I look forward to embarking on this new journey.”

Divine applied for the council based off of a recommendation from a friend who believed that the council was ‘right up her alley’. “As soon as I found more information I immediately began the application process and I never looked back,” she said.

Shiraz was however no stranger to the council, having begun her journey back in Grade 7 when she was elected for the Joburg Mini Junior Council. She learned so much from her peers in the mini council who exposed her to bigger and better possibilities to make a change in her community.

Both young women hope to make great and lasting contributions to the council next year. Divine plans to join the council’s Outreach Committee which focuses on lending a helping hand to those in need within the community.

“All I know is that I want to help others and if I am able to help at least one person during my time with the council I’ll know that I did my part,” said Divine.

Shiraz in particular looks forward to making a personal difference in many people’s lives all while changing their perspective on the world that we live in. “I plan to make new friends and collectively accomplish something bigger than just our individual goals,” said Shiraz.

Both learners would like to encourage more learners with a passion for their community to get involved with the Joburg Junior Council.

“Any initiative you take, whether it be big or small, is a difference nonetheless. I urge any students looking to be on council to find the passion within them to help those around their communities and to truly invest themselves and their time into making a change for many individuals around our city,” said Shiraz.

“I haven’t even formerly started/participated in any projects yet [but] I’m already so excited because I know that the Joburg Junior Council does good work. It’s an honour to be a part of something so important,” concluded Divine.
