A vegan potjie for the win!
BRYANSTON – It was potjie time on 31 October at the Bryanston Sports Club. Vegan based team, Very Low Carbs (VLC) won the title of best potjie at the annual Potjie & Beer festival.
The legendary Potjie & Beer Festival had a different taste this year.
Held at the Bryanston Sports Club, this year’s winners of the potjie competition were all about the plants.
Team Very Low Carbs (VLC) took first place with their trendy vegan potjie, a first for the festival, and many were surprised that a plant-based pot won.
Renowned judge Martin Kobald said he felt the competition was improving every year.
“The standard this year was fantastic. It’s nice to see the team effort and people being innovative. The vegan pot today was very nice and something different as well as going with the trend,” added Kobald.
The potjie’s were judged based on appearance, ingredients, taste, originality presentation and great gees and that’s what Team VLC was all about.
Teammates Jerry Whittle, Dave Keating and Brian O’Farrell were excited about their win.
“I’m very happy. A vegan win today just before world vegan day [1 November] is a fantastic victory. We have participated in the competition before and every year it has been meat. We were misguided for a couple of years,” joked Whittle.
Their team captain, Keating said his secret herbs were what made the potjie so delicious.
Disrupting the flow of events, Whittle added that vegans were people too.
“I must thank my spice master at The Carreira Centre, he will mix your masala and shake your chakra. I’m not a vegan myself, I eat a lot of meat but I have five beautiful women in my life who are all vegan so this was dedicated to them,” he said.
A win for World Vegan Month, plant-based eaters from all over can come together to celebrate their 100 per cent cruelty-free lifestyle.
