Department of Social Development launches Covid-19 Rapid Emergency Needs Assessment Report

The risk-adjusted strategy provides the department with the flexibility to effectively respond to the fast-evolving pandemic, ensuring a careful balance between saving lives and protecting livelihoods from the effects of a devastating economic recession.

Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu officially launched the Covid-19 Rapid Emergency Needs Assessment Report on 30 October.

The findings and recommendations set out in the report aim to showcase how the Department of Social Development Portfolio committee can contribute to South Africa’s Economic Recovery Plan, set out by President Cyril Ramaphosa in a joint sitting of Parliament last week.

The plan outlines the extraordinary measures that the country must take as a collective to rebuild the economy and ‘ensure that no vulnerable group is left behind’.

Ramaphosa pointed out that the success of the plan rests heavily on a strong social compact which is informed by evidence-based solutions.

“The report that we are launching today will prove to be an important piece of the puzzle as it contains valuable information that maps out the emergency needs, especially those of vulnerable populations of our society,” Zulu said at the launch.

Zulu added that the risk-adjusted strategy provides the department with the flexibility to effectively respond to the fast-evolving pandemic, ensuring a careful balance between saving lives and protecting livelihoods from the effects of a devastating economic recession.
