Residents urged to take care on their belongings while at restaurants

The security initiative asked residents to note that this is not only a problem in Parkhurst.

Public security initiative, Safeparks/Parksec reported that they receive weekly crime incidents on phone snatchings along 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. The security initiative asked residents to note that this is not only a problem in Parkhurst. The non-profit residents’ initiative, in collaboration with the Parkview police and security company Cortac, shared pamphlets to warn residents of these incidents.

“Suspects’ new modus operandi is to walk into a restaurant and act as a customer and as they walk out of the restaurant, they snatch the phone. Be aware and alert while enjoying your time at restaurants. We are aware that enjoying a meal or drink along our beautiful strip makes us more relaxed and unaware of our surroundings,” the security committee warned.

“We urge patrons at restaurants to not leave their phones on the tables as this is an easy target for phone snatching.”

They further warned that suspects drive up and down along 4th Avenue in Parkhurst and they are well aware of people’s behaviour of talking on their phones on the pavement and leaving phones on the table.

The security committee warned, “We have liaised with restaurants in our suburbs to train their waitrons to inform visitors talking on their phones to be aware of this crime trend. Being aware and proactive is the best way to prevent crime.”
