Update: Three suspects killed in shootout in Marlboro

MARLBORO – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) issued an alert on social media with regards to the crime scene on the corner of Lilium Avenue and Marigold Crescent.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) today (15 October) confirmed that three suspects were shot and killed in a shoot-out between members of the Hawks Tactical Operation Management Section (TOMS) and Gauteng Saturation Unit in Marlboro on 14 October.

Assisted by private security companies, the joint team received information about a suspected vehicle which was going to be used in an armed robbery.

According to spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the team managed to spot the suspected vehicle on the M1 highway.

“When the officers tried to stop the suspected vehicle, the suspects opened fire and a shoot-out ensued wherein three of the suspects were fatally wounded and the fourth was arrested,” said Mogale.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was used in a home invasion in Paulshof, Fourways 20 minutes before they were apprehended.

“The vehicle was affixed with false registration plates. Further probing found that the vehicle was sought in a Parkview home invasion.”

Two 9mm firearms were recovered from the scene – one had its serial number filed off.

Items including a plasma television from the Paulshof robbery were recovered.

“The arrested suspect will appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder, house robbery and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,” Mogale concluded.

A shoot-out between police and suspects erupted in Marlboro at noon today (14 October).

The suspects and police officers exchanged fire following a high-speed chase.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) issued an alert on social media with regards to the crime scene on the corner of Lilium Avenue and Marigold Crescent.

“The road is closed off to traffic, motorists can use Marlboro and Zinnia drives or Old Pretoria Main Road as alternatives,” said the JMPD social media account.

The South Africa Police Service has been approached for comment.
