Nothing can stop these inspiring women in business. Hirsch’s virtually hosted its monthly Women in Business event on 30 September to help inspire and motivate female entrepreneurs in the community. Much like most social gatherings, the networking event, usually held at Hirsch’s Hyde Park, was forced to go virtual due to the pandemic and lockdown regulations.

Hirsch’s Homestore co-founder and executive director Margaret Hirsch admitted to being a little hesitant at first about transitioning the networking event to virtual but in the end, it all paid off as the event was able to welcome many more women to its community.

She added that more now than ever women need to rally together to support one another. “We need to share our knowledge. I feel that women are going to grow the economy, we are the backbone of the South African economy but we need to work together,” said Hirsch.

The morning hosted businesswoman, social entrepreneur and patron of the arts Mathabo Kunene. Over the last few decades, Kunene has contributed towards the South African economy one business and one foundation at a time, which includes the Kunene Foundation which honours her late husband, renowned poet and freedom fighter Professor Mazisi Kunene.

This fierce businesswoman was actively involved in a number of anti-apartheid movements in the United Kingdome and the United States from the ’70s to the ’90s. Upon her return to South Africa post-apartheid, she participated in various community projects across the country.

Kunene continues to encourage all women to ‘dream big’ in order to accomplish their goals, especially those who are only starting out at the moment. “Dream big because if you dream small dreams you are not going to grow,” she said.

During the online discussion, many of the women also had the opportunity to share their personal business stories, hoping to inspire and motivate others to continue with their journey. “Don’t doubt yourself, know that you can do anything that you put your mind to. And if you miss, at least you will get somewhere,” Hirsch concluded.
