Adoption made easy at the Sandton SPCA

SANDTON – Each adoption is subject to a fixed adoption fee which covers the cost of sterilisation, microchip, core vaccinations and deworming (and FIV test for cats).

Adopting a pet from the SPCA has become so much easier!

The Sandton SPCA, which sends out weekly appeals to residents to seriously consider giving one of its furry friends a forever home, recently shared its simple, easy to understand adoption process.

However, before residents can undergo the adoption process, there are a number of factors to take into consideration:

  • During this time, the Sandton SPCA can only guarantee to facilitate adoptions to residents residing in its area of jurisdiction. Residents residing out of the jurisdiction area are encouraged to check the adoption listings at their local SPCA. A full list of suburbs under the Sandton SPCA’s jurisdiction can be found here
  • Due to the current restrictions, as part of the national lockdown, residents must make an appointment prior to coming to see the pets up for adoption. An appointment can be made on 011 444 7730.
  • Residents with existing dogs are required to bring them along for a ‘meet and greet’ capability test with the prospective new dog.
  • Residents will need to agree to a pre-home visit inspection which will allow SPCA inspectors to evaluate if the home is fit for the selected pet.
  • An appointment will be made for the home inspection and all security requirements must be met during the inspection.
  • The following documentation must accompany all adoption application forms:
      • Copy of identity document (ID)
      • Proof of physical residence
      • Permission letter from your landlord or body corporate (if applicable)
  • Residents have one week (seven days) from the time that the R200 non-refundable adoption fee is deposited to submit all of the requested documentation. A failure to do so will result in the animal going back up for adoption
  • The adoption fee for dogs and cats is R1 000 (this includes the non-refundable R200 deposit). It also covers the cost of sterilisation, microchip, core vaccinations and deworming (and FIV test for cats).
