Cubs take on greening projects and global issues

BRYANSTON – To earn this particular award, the cubs had to complete several special tasks.

Three cubs from the 1st Bryanston Scout Group recently received their Leaping Wolf badges.

Paige Botha and Jarrod Fiodi from the Friday Cub Pack and Santino Gozzer from the Saturday Cub Pack were the proud recipients of the highest award that a cub can earn. It must be obtained before their 11th birthday when they move up to the Scout Troop. As a result of the lockdown, the Scout group continued its weekly meetings online. The children had to be self-disciplined and work independently on completing the requirements for their badge.

“[This is a] significant achievement for the children as regular pack meetings had been closed since the Covid-19 lockdown commenced in March,” said Marisa Rakic, one of the leaders at the Friday Cub Pack. To earn this particular award the cubs had to complete several special tasks and projects which included a community greening project, identifying a global issue which they could help alleviate from home, and a special personal challenge. For the global awareness issue, Jarrod chose to focus on being water wise.

He found ways to improve his family’s water usage by putting bricks in the toilet cisterns, saving rainwater to use for flushing toilets, timing the use of showers and removing alien vegetation in the garden.

Santino opted for a recycling project and, through his efforts, inspired the residents in his residential estate to start a community recycling programme. For her personal challenge, Paige decided to write her own song – both the lyrics and music – and perform it in front of the Cub Pack. “Seeing the result of Paige’s Leaping Wolf logbook and having completed all the requirements, was something she did not realise she was able to do,” said another leader Silvia Ludwig.
