Braamfontein Spruit thanks you

Now that most have returned to work, the area along the Braamfontein Spruit in Bryanston East looks 'phenomenal'.

The Braamfontein Spruit Rehabilitation Project would like to give a big shout-out to the community for its continued support.

According to Bryanston resident and founder of the project Barry Cribb, the community’s donations enabled the project to continue paying its staff all throughout the lockdown. Now that most have returned to work, the area along the Braamfontein Spruit in Bryanston East looks ‘phenomenal’.

He added that due to the restrictions imposed by the lockdown, more and more members of the community are now visiting the area. “There has been a huge increase in the number of people that have discovered and now continue to use the stretch between the Scout Hall at Hans Crescent across Bryanston Drive and all the way down to the 12th Avenue Bridge,” he said.

“We know the old adage that ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ and one of the odd benefits Covid-19 has brought us is a greater awareness and use of the section of the river that we maintain.” As more runners, dog walkers, and cyclists come to the area, it helps to create a safer space. “We are so pleased to see an increase in mothers and children who now feel safe enough to come and enjoy the area.”

According to Cribb, the winter period allows the team to make a bigger impact on the general appearance of the spruit which is why they have been working hard to clear out all of the plastic and debris from the river and its banks.

“With the help of a couple of new volunteers, we are also now working on developing some indigenous flower beds that should make the route even more beautiful come the summer.”
