The St Stithian’s College community came together to go their part for Mandela Day on 18 July.
Due to the current restrictions of the Covid-19 lockdown the school had to think of alternative ways that would allow them to contribute to the community.
At the Girls’ College, the service committee organised a blanket-making drive which required members of the girls’ college to transform two ordinary pieces of fleece material into a warm blanket for someone in need.
The process began earlier in the week when teachers Elana Shaw and Vicky Chilvers went to purchase all of the material for distribution to volunteers.
With the help of teacher Kathy Aitken’s instructions, no sewing was required as the tassels are cut into the material and the two layers are fastened by knotting them together.
The blankets will be distributed to individuals in need this week.
Also to celebrate the significance of the day, the Grade 8 visual arts learners designed a series of 67 drawings inspired by water and its beauty.
Over at the Boys’ College the staff and learners hosted a donation drive whereby each of the learners were encouraged to donate story and school books, stationery and puzzles as part of the school’s Literacy Promotions Initiative.
The young men showed up in their numbers to support the drive with a mountain of donations.
