The power of community and Redhill School

MORNINGSIDE – During its five-week-long food drive, the learners, teachers and families of Redhill School in Morningside donated dozens of essential food items.

The Redhill School community has opened its hearts and fed more than 900 people.

During its five-week-long food drive, the learners, teachers and families of Redhill School in Morningside donated dozens of essential food items, clothing, toys and stationery to the youth centre of the Dlala Nje Foundation.  The foundation runs the community centre at the Ponte City Apartment in Joburg CBD which supports more than 1 400 families living in the inner-city area.

The idea for the food drive derived from the learners of the school’s arts and culture committee. In its first week, the food drive was able to collect enough food to feed 104 families. Rounding off its fifth and final week on 11 June, the drive collected 281 parcels which were distributed to 925 vulnerable community members, 600 of which were children.

The organisation’s Niki Rayner added that now that the food drive had come to an end, the foundation would focus on other projects.  “As a few more families went back to work with Level 3, the food drive has come to an end and now Dlala Nje is moving our focus onto an education drive for the youngsters who aren’t yet returning to school,” she said.

The foundation has begun distributing worksheets to the learners, relevant to their age groups, and collecting them once a week for review. “We started last week [8 June] and have distributed to 50 kids, this week looks to be more,” Rayne concluded.
