Rotary Sandton continues its service

SANDTON – The club redirected a substantial amount of its funds to a number of non-profit organisations including the Love Trust organisation to provide food to 270 families in Tembisa and Gift of the Givers to extend its distribution of food hampers.

Despite the restrictions imposed by the lockdown, the Rotary Club of Sandton continues to give back to the community.

Following the implementation of the lockdown regulations, the club decided to continue its meetings virtually as well as use its resources to respond the needs currently facing communities at large. The club redirected a substantial amount of its funds to a number of non-profit organisations including the Love Trust organisation to provide food to 270 families in Tembisa and Gift of the Givers to extend its distribution of food hampers.

The Rotarians have also funded the purchase of material to support the production of fabric masks for patients at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Coronationville.

According to club president Greg Hill, the club has unfortunately had to cancel many of its planned activities, including its annual Rotary Fun Day in partnership with Special Olympics South Africa. “We will be back stronger than before and look forward to re-engaging in uplifting our community,” he said. Hill added that one of the projects that will resume once schools reopen focuses on installing educational resources and providing training for teachers at Nokuphila School in Tembisa.

“The Rotary project at Nokuphila School is the product of a Rotary Global Grant, led by the Rotary Club of Coesfeld in Germany and partnered with the Rotary Club of Sandton. The support provided during the lockdown is an extension of the Rotary Club of Sandton’s eagerness to see the project and the learners succeed when teaching resumes,” he said.

Lindsay Owen, marketing and fundraising manager for Love Trust, added the Rotary grant provided great support because Covid-19 resources for compliance were not included in the budget.”We’re eager to accelerate the Rotary project as soon as restrictions allow, as we know that the training and teaching aids will allow us to enhance the learning experience for our children even more, at a time when they,” Owen concluded.
