City Power ‘ready’ for the cold front

JOBURG – City Power completed most of its infrastructural maintenance ahead of the winter period, allowing them to add new and refurbished transformers to some substations prone to outages.

As the crisp, cold weather creeps in around Johannesburg on 12 June, City Power has assured residents that it is prepared for the increase in demand for electricity.

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the electricity distributor pre-empted the increased demand as customers seek to warm their homes during these cold conditions.

“We are ready as City Power and can’t say we didn’t expect it. We have rolled out our winter strategy from May, which includes increasing the power supply in the grid; adding more resources including spares, material and manpower especially in areas prone to unplanned outages, to ensure we respond quickly to the outages which increase during this time due to the overload on our network because of the high demand,” he said.

In anticipation, City Power completed most of its infrastructural maintenance ahead of the winter period, allowing them to add new and refurbished transformers to some substations prone to outages.

Customers are however encouraged to assist by using electricity sparingly – switch of any non-essential appliances like swimming pool pumps, geysers, multiples heaters and stoves.

“This will ensure that we do not impose load rotation which is really the last resort to protect our infrastructure from blowing up,” Mangena concluded.
