Redhill learner spearheads TEDx talk

SANDTON – The journey began as Wangari started planning the event, rounding up a list of potential speakers.

Excitement builds as Redhill School gets ready to host its TEDxRedhillSchool series of talks.

The school recently obtained its licence for the virtual TEDx talks which will be hosted by deputy head girl, Wangari Mbuthia. Wangari is part of the school’s first cohort of International Baccalaureate learners. As part of the curriculum, the learners must complete a CAS project (creativity, activity, and service).

“TEDx is a program of local, independently-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience and while researching I discovered that TEDx events can be organised by the youth and I was very keen on exploring this for my project,” said Wangari. She added she was also inspired to host such an event after attending similar conferences organised by the school in the past.

“I knew that the event had huge potential to get so many learners, teachers as well as a broader community involved. In early March, I completed a form about myself and my vision for the event and submitted it on TED.com and after a long eight-week wait, I was thrilled to have received the license to host the event at my school,” Wangari exclaimed.

The journey began as Wangari started planning the event, rounding up a list of potential speakers. “I slowly began making plans to hold my event in late May/early June but my plans were halted when South Africa went under lockdown and, given that I would only be able to host the event while I was a student at Redhill School, I began to shift my plan to an online event,” she added. Wangari said the group was currently receiving speaker applications and would soon move onto curating the programme.

“[It] will include performers and artists from my school and to get the word out for people to start registering for the event on 20 June.”

“The theme for the event is The Beauty of the Unknown which I chose because I wanted to highlight the beauty in discovery and the journeys taken to get there. I hoped to inspire discussion as well as encourage students that there are so many opportunities for them to find their passion,” she concluded.
