Driver arrested for reckless driving and alcohol transportation

SANDTON – The suspect was found to be transporting alcohol in the boot of the vehicle.

A driver initially arrested on 9 May for reckless driving on the M1 Highway near Sandton was found to be transporting alcohol.

According to a tweet by the Gauteng Traffic Police, the suspect was reportedly speeding at 142km/h in a 100km/h zone during Level 4 lockdown.

After the suspect was stopped, it was revealed that he was hiding large qualities of alcohol in the boot of the vehicle which he attempted to hide with leaves.

On a compliance visit to a shopping centre in Pietermaritzburg on 11 May, Minister of Police Bheki Cele noted that there have been more violations for the dispensing and transporting alcohol since the transition to Level 4.

“There seems to be confusion with the regulations because in Level 5, 10 people were arrested for alcohol offences but since Level 4, almost 60 people have been arrested,” said the minister.
