Correctional services records three deaths

The Department of Correctional Services confirms 177 cases of Covid-19 as of 8 May.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has recorded 177 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with three deaths and 87 recoveries as of 8 May.

In a statement on 8 May, DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed five new Covid-19 cases.

He added two inmates and one official have died from the virus.

“DCS continues to provide support to both officials and inmates who test positive to Covid-19,” said Nxumalo

The total breakdown is as follows:

Eastern Cape – 102
Officials – 36
Inmates – 66
58 recoveries
2 deaths

Western Cape – 59
Officials – 56
Inmates – 3
Recoveries – 27
One death under investigation

Limpopo – 2
Officials – 2
Inmates – 0
One recovery

Gauteng – 13
