Living under lockdown and still being physically active

MORNINGSIDE – Living under lockdown comes with a lot of challenges. Using this time to reflect and better yourself while at home is important.

The lockdown has brought about many lifestyle changes to people. Working from home and having to separate home life from work is not easy and many are still adjusting to it.

A Morningside resident and single mother of two tries to juggle the two in order to keep everything balanced. Nicole Glickman finds ways to manage her family, work and still being physically active.

While she has always been a gym lover, when her husband passed away five years ago she started running – it was something she had never done before.

“Somehow it felt like I ran through the pain and the pain would leave my body with every step and every heartbeat,” she said.

She is a firm believer that a healthy outside begins with the inside and that exercise and mindfulness play an essential part in taking care of our minds and bodies.

“I am quite competitive and I always wanted my biggest competitor to be myself.”

She joined the Mzansi Lockdown Marathon, running 21 days, 2km each day.

Ever since the MyRun opened at The Sandton Sports Club she has been a member. When she saw that MyRun was running a competition during the lockdown, she entered to keep herself busy and physically active.

The advent of the lockdown has broken the silos between work life and home life. The lockdown has reminded her that it’s time to slow down. It has been a time to reflect on the value of life and the essence of relationships between friends and families.

“The lockdown has been hard on my children; they are in matric and despite circumstances, how quickly everyone has adapted to online learning. Students are accepting more and more responsibility to make the effort to learn by themselves, it’s really hard. They have no idea what awaits them for the rest of this year.”

She added that Covid-19 isn’t the worst virus but a negative mindset is. She hopes people stay home during this time. It’s important to look after your health.
