Ashraful Aid to the rescue

MARLBORO– International humanitarian NGO Ashraful Aid has set up an emergency relief fund to help fight the spread of Covid-19.

It’s the third week of the national lockdown and the sense of community in Sandton is growing.

Humanitarian organisation Ashraful Aid has set up an Emergency Relief Fund in the fight against Covid-19.

Suhail Wadee, chairman of the organisation said that they have integrated a three-phase plan. In order to flatten the curve, they have taken the preventative measures in disinfecting public sites and providing education about Covid-19 using the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

“As a disaster response NGO we are also assisting with sanitation and meal supply at Covid-19 testing stations,” said Wadee.

To date, they have raised R350 000. This will be used to provide food to service personnel, affected families, vulnerable communities, supply water to emergency personnel and hand over disinfectants to testing stations in Joburg.

Media liaison officer, Ahmed Ismail added that now is the time to show humanity. “Especially in a country like ours with many people living below the poverty line. We immediately put our plan onto action to assist people, to hand out grocery hampers to the most vulnerable in our society.”

With some focus on the vulnerable, Ashraful Aid together with The City of Johannesburg Disaster Management and Gauteng Provincial Department is also assisting essential workers on the front lines. “Heroes working in the field are also stressed and working long shifts. We have worked out a feeding scheme for paramedics on a daily basis. We also went the extra mile in sanitising the ambulance vans and providing sanitiser to them.”

He said that their efforts will run through the lockdown and even after. “We are making a plea that if people can help out where they can then please do. We can only do so much with the resources we have, so the more donors we can get the further our assistance can reach.”

He would like to appeal to the residents of Sandton and South Africa as a whole to open their hearts during these trying times.
