Concerning number of vehicles on the road – Joburg Mayor

SANDTON – City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Geoff Makhubo joins a roadside checkpoint in Rivonia Road to encourage compliance by motorists.

City of Johannesburg executive mayor Geoff Makhubo and MMC for Public Safety Mally Mokoena joined law enforcement in conducting roadside checks.

In an effort to clamp down on the movement of individuals within the city, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department conducted roadside checks by setting up daily roadblocks in various areas.

The City officials accompanied Metro police officers in Rivonia Road in Sandton on 3 April. Officers were mainly stopping vehicles and checking for permits. “This is part of our efforts to ensure that motorists comply with the gazetted state of disaster regulations,” Mokoena said.

The group later moved to other areas in the city.

Makhubo noted that he is concerned about the high number of vehicles on the roads.

Mayoral spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase confirmed that there have been three arrests thus far for non-compliance.
